Description: Auction description France 1770: Old Master Drawing, A Courtship in the Pleasure Garden I obtained this delicious, 18th century work on handmade, chainlinedpaper, executed in inkwash, pen, and ink, at a recent fine arts auction in Paris. The garden space and its pleasures are defined by the tall, elegant tree at the left, and the little goat snacking on a plant, lower right. In the foreground, an ardent young swain presses his suit to a young maiden; just behind them, another girl is approaching, emerging from the woods, seemingly seeking to join them. To the right, also in the middle distance, two children, a boy and a girl, are at play, echoing, in their own way, the game of love in the foreground. This work from an anonymous hand is so admirably conceived and composed! I like the balance of realistic detail and dream-like fantasy. It's an allegory of earthly pleasures. Dimensions of the drawing are about 7 inches by 5 inches. It was nicely matted out, probably in the late 19th century, to 11 inches by 9 inches. The paper support has toned a little, but the picture is in quite good and appealing condition. The mat, too, has some age-related toning but still sets off the drawing very well. A lovely Old Master creation, offering much joy to its new owner, modestly priced. Shipping cost within the U.S. will be $9. And to see what else I have for sale, please click here.
