Description: A lovely representation of this scarce date and mint from the reign of Louis the XV. Soft gunmetal toning over relatively mark free surfaces for the grade. NGC XF40. Louis XV, known as "Louis the Beloved" (Louis le Bien-Aimé), was the King of France and Navarre from 1715 to 1774. He succeeded his great-grandfather, Louis XIV, and his reign saw a mixture of successes and challenges, contributing to the later difficulties faced by his successor, Louis XVI. Here are key points about Louis XV:Early Life and Ascension: Louis XV was born on February 15, 1710, at the Palace of Versailles. He became king at the age of five upon the death of his great-grandfather, Louis XIV, in 1715. Due to his young age, a regency was established, with Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, serving as regent. Regency Period: The Regency period (1715–1723) was marked by the influence of Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, who governed on behalf of the young king. The regency ended when Louis XV reached the age of majority. Personal Rule: Louis XV assumed personal rule in 1723 at the age of 13. His reign faced challenges, including financial difficulties, conflicts with the Parlements (the French regional appellate courts), and wars. Wars and Military Conflicts: Louis XV's reign included involvement in several wars, including the War of the Polish Succession, the War of the Austrian Succession, and the Seven Years' War. These conflicts had varying degrees of success and impact on France. Maupeou Reforms: In 1770, Louis XV initiated judicial reforms known as the Maupeou Reforms, which aimed to centralize and streamline the judicial system. However, these reforms faced resistance and were reversed after his death. Marriages and Heirs: Louis XV was married to Marie Leszczyńska. They had several children, but many of them died in infancy. His grandson, who would become Louis XVI, eventually succeeded him. Pompadour and Du Barry: Louis XV was known for his relationships with influential mistresses, including Madame de Pompadour and later Madame du Barry. These relationships had political implications and influenced court life. Economic Challenges: The financial difficulties faced by Louis XV were exacerbated by the cost of wars and the maintenance of a lavish court lifestyle. Attempts at financial reforms were only partially successful. Death: Louis XV died on May 10, 1774, at the Palace of Versailles. His death marked the end of the direct Bourbon male line, as he was succeeded by his grandson, Louis XVI.Louis XV's reign is often seen as a time of transition and challenges. While there were periods of economic difficulty and military setbacks, there were also cultural and artistic achievements during the Enlightenment. His reign set the stage for the more tumultuous events that would unfold during the subsequent reign of Louis XVI.
