Description: Brigadier General Henry Edwin Tremain (1840-1910) was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1892 for his extraordinary heroism as a Union major in the Civil War. Tremain fought in many of the most significant battles of the war, including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg. The action for which he received the Medal of Honor took place during a battle in 1864 in Georgia when two brigades of Union soldiers were firing at each other, and Tremain rode between them to stop the firing. In 1865, Tremain was named a brigadier general. After the war, he returned to New York City where he graduated from Columbia Law School and thereafter had a successful career as a lawyer. The book offered here, First Citizens of the Republic, was published in 1906. As far as I can determine, there was only one edition. The book consisted of two-page biographies of then- (and in some cases now-) famous American citizens, accompanied by portrait photographs, including William Randolph Hearst, Thomas Edison, and President Theodore Roosevelt. Tremain's photograph and biography can be found on pages 61-62. On the first free end paper, Tremain, (hero of the Civil War, Medal of Honor winner and Brigadier General), humble creature that he was, signed the book as a Christmas gift for his wife, Mrs. H. E. Tremain. This book is from my personal collection which I am beginning to sell off. Unless noted otherwise in the description, the prints, art and other items that I sell are not "reproductions". Please check my other listings for additional items of interest. I will combine shipping.
