Description: Offered here is " Ellis Island & Other Stories " by Mark Helprin, in a stated first printing published by Delacorte Press in 1981. This copy is inscribed to editor and book critic Sybil Steinberg, dated, and signed by the author on the half title page: " 8 January 1981 For Sybil Steinberg, Thank you for a very kind review, and a nice interview. Mark Helprin (signed)". This edition features the novella "Ellis Island" and a number of short stories, most previously published in The New Yorker magazine. This hardcover text is in Very Good Plus condition. The book has red boards that are quarter bound in cream cloth. There are red titles to the spine that show some rubbing to the bottom third. The boards are lightly age faded, but generally clean aside from two smudges on the back board (1/4- and 1/2- inches). There is minor wear on the bottom edges and the corners, and two very small white marks on the top edge. The book block is primarily clean and unmarked. The front free end paper has some faint stains. There is a small red ink stain (1/4-inch) on the page opposite "The Schreuderspitze" title page , a faint red line (3/4-inch) on page 88 and two light smudges (1/2-inch) on page 100; all other pages are unmarked and clean. The binding is tight. This book comes included with its original unclipped dust jacket (originally priced at $10.95) which is in Very Good Minus condition. The jacket is age tanned and has faint scratches and wear. There are tears and chips along the edges, primarily at the head/tail of the spine panel and at the flaps of the dust jacket (max 1/2 inch along the fold of the back flap).
