Description: Commemoration - U S Navy Shakedown Cruises - Gravesend, ENGLAND - 1910: Many US ships visited Gravesend on shakedown or operational cruises. Prior to around 1913 there was no indication of the port on the cancel. It is thus difficult to determine if a naval card was posted from a specific port. The third division of the Atlantic fleet visited Gravesend, November to December 1910. A Set of six postcards commemorating the event was issued by Valentines. A similar set used the same frame, but showed pictures of London. Other sets are known for visits to Portland and Weymouth in the UK. Here, is one of the London cards - Tower of London & Tower Bridge. Gravesend is a town in northwest Kent, England, situated 21 miles (35 km) east-southeast of Charing Cross (central London) on the south bank of the River Thames and opposite Tilbury in Essex. Located in the diocese of Rochester, it is the administrative centre of the Borough of Gravesham. Gravesend marks the eastern limit of the Greater London Built-up Area, as defined by the UK Office for National Statistics. This Embossed Divided Back Era postcard, showing crossed Stars & Stripes and Union Jacks, is in good condition.
