The Yamato, a battleship of the Imperial Japanese Navy and the first of the Yamato-class, was among the largest battleships ever built, alongside its twin Musashi. Constructed during an arms race with the U.S., it was armed with nine massive 460mm guns and had a displacement of 65,000 tons. Launched in 1941, shortly after Pearl Harbor, the Yamato measured 263 meters in length and carried nearly 2,500 crew. It was sunk by American bombers and torpedo planes on April 7, 1945.
