Description: An original Civil War letter from N.G Field at "Wassonville, Wash. Co. Iowa , Feb 14, 63" to Iowa Adjutant General N.B Baker informing him that one Reuben Parker, either 26th or 28th Iowa Regt , "a tall and powerful man, said to be the best in the regiment" a man and his brother the writer knows well, who came to Iowa as boys from Vermont, settled in North English, has deserted and gone to the "Wisconsin Pinerys" . The writer says he was up at North English recently and Parker had shown up to visit his family but has returned top the Pinerys under an assumed name , claiming there were many more of them up there "who Uncle Sam could not take , their PO is Sparta, and reports he regrets leaving his regiment very much and would give everything to be back again in good standing".The letter is signed "N.G. Fields, PM". The reverse includes a pencil notation from Lt Colonel Charles S Lovell, 18th US Infantry at Milwaukee informing General Baker that "This Dept has nothing to do with arresting deserters and he must write the Acting Asst Provost Marshal of Wisconsin.
