Description: A circa 1850 Staffordshire pottery figurine "The Elephant of Siam", a very nice example of a desirable model. The figurine is just over 6.25 inches tall and is just over 6 inches wide. It is in excellent condition with no chips, no cracks, no repairs, just some typical manufacturing kiln shrinkage separations and some crazing. The scene being depicted is from a London play called "The New and Gorgeous Serio-Comic Indian Burletta Spectacle" with the character Prince Almansor being rescued by The Elephant of Siam, who wrenches the bars from Prince Almansor's tower window, allowing the Prince to escape by sliding down the elephant's trunk. The trained elephant ("The Fire Fiend") was purchased by Wombwell's Menagerie of London in 1830! Please see the photos for details. Thanks for looking! a3 Track Page Views With Auctiva's FREE Counter
