From the book “In August 1942, U-156 sank the British passenger ship Laconia, which carried more than 2,700 crew and passengers, of whom 1,800 were Italian prisoners of war. Though the U-boat was clearly marked with a Red Cross and was surrounded by Laconia survivors on rafts and on the deck of the submarine, it was attacked by an American aircraft.
