Description: I have here a very nice blacksmith rounding hammer with the head weighing in at 4.5 pounds. I forge these from new 1045 steel. I forge the eye by driving a drift through from both sides to form a slightly hour glass shaped eye to keep the handle snug in the head. I rough grind them and then heat treat and temper them so that they are tough without being brittle. I then finish sand and polish both faces so that no extra marks are left on your work by a rough hammer face. The hickory handle I shape to fit the hand nicely and then burn it lightly and soak it in linseed oil. The handle is held in by two wooden wedges, one steel wedge, and then soaked in glue. I now have the weight stamped above my name on one side of the head. The other side just has my name on it.
