Promotional comic for the Lego Bionicle toys. Cover price $2.25. Trivia First printings of this comic had the words 'Arriving Summer 2001' stamped between Tahu's legs. This was removed in the digital version. In the alpha v0.006 build of BIONICLE: The Legend of Mata Nui, the files "Lev4_eng.slb" and "legocinePohatuMeetsKopaka.mp3" indicate that the game would have featured a cutscene adapted from Kopaka and Pohatu's first meeting in this comic. The comic was later re-released in 2003 at San Diego Comic-Con with a new cover from artist Ashley Wood. In some parts of the world, the re-released comic came packaged with one of the three versions of the poisoned Kanohi Hau Nuva. Extra Features Mid-comic: Advertisement for promotional BIONICLE events featuring Andy Macdonald. Comic middle: The Toa and the Turaga section discusses the upcoming six Toa and six Turaga sets. Comic end: Advertisement for the BIONICLE.com website. Rear cover: Advertisement for the trading card game BIONICLE: Quest for the Masks. Notes Continuity This issue, as the first BIONICLE comic, introduces us to many of the series' elements and plot points. Among these is that the Toa are meant to defeat Makuta and free the island of Mata Nui from his evil, a mission which will take them the next three years of story to do so. This issue also introduces us to the plot device of the 2001 story: the Toa need to collect all the Kanohi masks, fighting various Rahi to claim them. Turaga Nuju typically speaks in an unusual language of bird-like chirps and whistles; here he has temporarily abandoned his vow of bird-speak to relate critical knowledge to the amnesic Kopaka. While only Turaga Nuju appears in this comic, all of the Turaga will appear as a group at the beginning of the next issue to relate more critical knowledge, this time to the reader. The six Toa make their first appearance in this issue, and will remain the focus of the comic for the next three years. Trivia Greg Farshtey begins his ten-year tenure as the sole writer of the BIONICLE comic series with this issue. Carlos D'Anda also begins his five-year tenure as the artist for the BIONICLE series with this issue, departing at the end of the original series' run. Richard Bennett also scores his sole credit on the BIONICLE series here, before handing inking duties over to Randy Elliott. Please use pictures to judge condition. I do not grade comics.
