During the 1950s and 1960s he was cast primarily in westerns. Murphy was saddled with the label of being a difficult performer to work with, but in all fairness, he spent most of his postwar life battling PTSD before anyone even knew what that was or there was such a thing, let alone treatment or understanding for it. Murphy's only television series, Whispering Smith, had a brief run in 1961. It has become one of the most sought after of all television westerns, Whispering Smith featured Audie Murphy as a Denver based railroad detective in the Old West of the 1870s. Many of the episodes were based on actual Denver Police cases, and Smith has to use all of his wits, as well as his skill with a Colt .45, to bring justice to those who would defraud the railroad. His superior was played by Sam Buffington and his partner by Guy Mitchell. For Audie Murphy fans, this is a exciting 50's western TV show with each episode done in the style of an Agatha Christie mystery novel and Audie as a Hercule Poirot type investigator. In the 1959 film "Cast a Long Shadow", a ranch foreman, Chip (played by John Dehner), approaches aimless hard-drinker Matt Brown (played by Audie Murphy) in a New Mexico bar. The owner of Chip's ranch has died and left Matt his land, thinking the troubled drifter may be his long-estranged son. Initially, Matt plans on selling the ranch, but then decides to keep it, hoping to impress Janet (played by Terry Moore). The ranch, however, turns out to be in foreclosure, forcing Matt and Chip to come up with a plan to pay off their debt to the bank. By the way, “cast a long shadow” is an expression that means someone or something has considerable influence on other people or events. Lieutenant Audie Murphy has been mentioned as the most highly decorated soldier in American history. The bonus story about Audie Murphy provided in this set tells some of this story.
