Description: It has been a constant for more than two and a half centuries, that Father Alfaro would return from preaching mission in Dolores Hidalgo, and that he rested under a Mesquite tree that was located where the venerated sanctuary now stands. In his dreams, he saw our lord Jesus Christ, with his crown of thorns, carrying the Holy Cross on his back, telling Father Alfaro it was His will that the place where he was resting became a place of penitence and prayer, and that effect, a temple should be built. The first stone of this venerated Temple was blessed, and then laid on Monday May 3rd, 1740. A few clergymen from the Neri San Felipe Oratorio Congregation, which Father Alfaro belonged to, were there to witness the event The first phase was completed in eight years and so, on Sunday July 20, 1748 the consecration of the church was made with the placement of the image of Jesus of Nazareth in the main altar.
