Antique Large J.B. Owens Majolica Jardiniere or Planter Late 1800s Early 1900s

Description: A scare piece of J.B. Owens Pottery Company with color blended under sea motif with fish, vegetation, and a wave-like ripple. Dating from the early 1900s, it is perfect for holding a plant or to display alone. Measures 12.5"W x 12.5"D x 9.5"H. With the exception of fine crazing throughout, it is in excellent condition. Many thanks to Edward A. Council, PhD. PG, a collector and expert on the J.B.Owens Pottery Company, for the information and images (last two) which he so kindly shared: FYI: Your jardiniere was 100% made by the J.B. Owens Pottery Company ~1900/1901 and is definitely a scarce piece of pottery. I've only seen approximately ~9 examples of this mold shape in 30+ years. As proof of its provenance, please see the attached advertisement with the complete jardiniere and pedestal. This advertisement was published in the Pottery Trade Journal "China, Glass & Pottery Review" from May 1900. A fire destroyed the Owens' Pottery Factory along with all of their existing pottery molds on March 2, 1902. Some of the lost molds were remade, but the one that made yours and mine was not likely re-created due to cost to create a new mold with lots of 3-D features.J.B. Owens produced dozens of different mold shapes in different sizes. My complete jardiniere and pedestal.set (image also provided) has a 10" tall jardiniere. So yours is likely less common being a larger size. It may or may not have had a matching pedestal. Also, your jardiniere was likely made earlier (i.e. mid- to late-1900), as with time each casting from a mold less detail exists as a very thin part of the mold gets pulled off with the cast pottery (i.e. like the non-crisp detail on my set suggests a late casting). The three blended glaze colors on your jardiniere are correct for an Owens jardiniere and its part of the J.B. Owens "Colored Glaze" Line The copyright on the attached advertisement should have expired after 70 to 95 years, and can't exceed 120 years, So you are free to use the attached image in your Ebay listing (as I've been going for years). You are also free to use the information I've provided.Edward A. Council, PhD, PG Your jardiniere was 100% made by the J.B.
