Up for sale/auction is an antique (circa mid 1900s) Himalayan Buddhist holy box. It was used by nomadic tribes in the Himalayas (Tibet/Nepal region) to carry sacred grains or prayers. This is an authentic relic and was not produced commercially. The ghau has been in my personal collection of Himalayan and tribal jewelry for over 25 years. The deep red coral “stones” appear to be carnelian as opposed to coral. The turquoise colored stones are thought to be glass or enamel. The metals are mixed, and consist of silver plated copper and brass. There is fine detail and wire-work on the front portion of the box. There is a lotus mandala on the back lid. The box can be worn with either end up, as in addition to a bale, there is a decorative loop that can be threaded by a cord, chain or decorative bead necklace. Ghau measurements: The box measures 2” and 3/16” tall by 1” and 9/16” across. It is 5/16” deep. It weighs 21 grams. Condition: Very good for a piece of antique tribal jewelry carried and worn for over 75 years. There are scuffs, scratches, dents to the box portion. I will do my best to photograph these or point out any issues. Please review all photos prior to bidding. I leave the patina on pieces, especially with oxidation. If you would prefer something to be shinier and polished before it is mailed, please contact me and I will use an industry recommended product to hand polish, although it may leave a slight odor that can easily be removed by you with rinsing in water with gentle detergents.
