Description: This is a figural ink well cover - it originally sat on a porcelain base which held an ink well and sand shaker. This listing is for the cover only. Glue has been applied to the inside of the base - this is not an original feature. Albrecht Conta and Christian Boehme purchased a porcelain factory in Poessneck, Thuringia, Germany, in 1814. The factory produced porcelain figurines and novelties under the name Conta & Boehme. Early production figures, up to 1850, sometimes only had a four digit model number incised on the base. These are usually foundwithout the Conta & Boehme shield mark. The company’s main business was export to the British Isles, the United States and many other countries. In 1880, they exhibited at the Melbourne Exhibition. The company was still listed in the German trade directory in 1937 although production is believed to have stopped at the outbreak of WWI in 1914.
