Description: A great piece of 19th century Kansas history in the form of a handwritten letter on official House of Representatives Kansas letterhead from an unknown representative (mentioned only as Uncle Lewis? or Levi?) to his niece. The letter is written at his desk i the hall of the house and discusses one of his activities there to his niece. It is accompanied with an envelope that the letter was mailed in. This member was elected in 1890 and began office in March of 1891 so the letter is penned just days after he entered office. He also mentioned he was on the Dynamite Investigating Committee which we found was appointed at the Session of 1891, to investigate the explosion which occurred at Coffeyville, Kansas, October 18, 1888. We were unable to find the members of the committee. Letter reads: “Dear niece, I am sitting in my seat in representative hall, and can share a few moments to write a hasty letter to my dear niece, Joe. If you have learned as much the last two months as I have, you will be well paid for time and money spent. Now I hope you will not jump to a hasty conclusion, and imagine that your old uncle, in a few months has become very wise or influential, a great, nothing of that sort is in my thoughts. I don’t know even whether I have done anything That will help to move the car of progress. But I have lived in a New World, a new relations and associations, and have gained experience and an insight in public work, that no man can have without actually being here. No, I have for years, knowing that a small number of the members usually shape everything that he’s done in the legislature and I have always felt that I would prefer to stay at home rather than to be only a figurehead. Now I can at least claim that I am one of those who have excited a fair amount of influence on the work done here. I have frequently spoken, and have always received good attention. this was in a terrible bad place to speak. In very few can talk land and district enough to be understood, and many members who are good speakers in school houses have not the nerve to attempt it here. The legislature will adjourn Tuesday night but I can’t go home then because I am on the dynamite investigating committee and we want to get through with all work by that time, it may take a week or two longer. We are getting many of the notabilities of the state before something. As witnesses, the treasurer, Mrs. Seer, Ross, Hutchins, Deaconess, and other. The evidence so far is been very damaging to the republican party, and may just send some of them behind the bars. Of the work of this legislature I will not speak in detail, but will state that substantially. We have accomplished all that was promised in the campaign, and have therefore demonstrated that when the people are assured, and Earnest that they can elect men to carry out this will, and therefore, if the people party continues in the work, as they have begun, they can carry out every reference decision. I hope and trust that you are getting along well in your studies and that you are learning to something and some thing, your mind and body, and that you fully realize that we are the builders of the house we live in.” In Excellent condition.
