Description: A Tribal Asmat Bowl with Figures Carved at Both Ends Papua New Guinea-Lot 50Up for sale is this primitive tribal artifact of an Asmat Wooden Bowl both ends carved with a Female Figure sitting with both hands on chin and an Ancestor Head. (Lot 50) This primitive and unique wooden bowl is used for both practical and ceremonial purposes and is made from the lower end of the Sago tree leaf. These bowls were used for serving roasted balls of sago grubs to guests. The Figures face upward so that when in use, the face can be seen. When not in use they are placed upside down on a rack above the head of the owner so that they can remain in contact. Painted with traces of lime, red ochre and charcoal. There are old inventory numbers on back (459). Provenance: Private collection. Collected in the early 1970s during an expedition through the Central Asmat and the Casuarina Coast of Papua New Guinea and selected prior to New Guinean regulations limiting the export of art.Condition: This piece is one-of-a-kind, hand carved by Asmat Tribesmen. This artifact is in good condition it might exhibit signs of environmental exposure, insect degradation or utilitarian use, chips, natural wood splits, patina, polish from handling and repairs that are consistent with its age.Head of ancestor is missing a piece on top.
