A lichen consisting of a symbiosis between Fungi and Algae, coming together to create a beautiful organism that I like to call fairy tinsel! It looks so festive and magical strewn from moss laden trees in clean forests. The popular name is “Old Mans Beard” Usnea is a positive marker for clean air, it will not grow near air pollution. This is a great addition to your herbal first-aid kit or apothecary. It is an incredible antibiotic, apply immediately to wounds to keep germs at bay. In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicines) its cooling and drying. It clears heat, moves dampness, and detoxes.” It’s - Antifungal - Antiviral - Antibiotic - Anti-inflammatory- Antioxidant - Antimicrobial - Antibacterial - It contains Usnic acid, which is used as an antimicrobial preservative in cosmetics. Also isolated as sodium usinate in commercial medicine. Steep a small handful of Usnea in 8oz hot water for 30 mins. Drink through the day.
