Original GEM BU RAW 2005-P New "SPEAR TIP" DDO/DDR Bison ERROR/VARIETY!! (2-COIN SET) Well defined 2005-P Jefferson "SPEAR TIP" Bison/Buffalo Nickel error/variety. The Buffalo/Bison has "Long Tip of a Spear" in "Strong Relief", protruding from lower right front buffalo leg -- see micro-photos. Taken from original BU mint bag and discovered by me on 4/15/05. Also included in this lot is the very rare "Crying Jefferson" error per below description. Those who have seen or obtained the Denver Mint variety known as the "SPEARED BISON" discovered by Pamela Ryman-Moir, or our own "BROKEN TOMAHAWK" may also want one of these in their collection. This Bison variety is illustrated in the June 6, 2005 issue of Coin World where they wrongly called it the "EXTRA LEG", but our microphotos clearly show it is the "SPEAR TIP" variety. There is another variety known as the Extra Leg, but we do not offer it and it is clearly different than that depicted in Coin World or the one offered here. We were fortunate to locate in a later bag, the "corrected version" of this same "Spear Tip" error / variety coin which shows the "SPEAR TIP" completely removed and polished from the die. In the process for some strange reason the obverse die face of Jefferson was also strongly polished creating the very dramatic appearance of him "CRYING" -- Our pics 1,2,&3 show the tears streaming down from the eye and on down, probably crying out from his grave at the financial mess our nation is in. It is a very rare and nearly unprecedented modern occurrence to locate and identify a later batch of coins with the Mint-Corrected version of an earlier error -- odds are about 1:2000,000 (one chance in 2 million or greater), and then what are the odds that the later corrected version is also a new dramatic error in itself?? Also note that we located a few "CRYING JEFFERSON"s that were not the corrected version per the above, as well as a few corrected versions per the above that were not "CRYING JEFFERSON"'s -- Go Figure? The ones you receive with this lot will be the SPEAR TIP variety and a great example of the Very Rare Corrected Version ERROR which we identify as the "CRYING JEFFERSON". We think that the Crying Jefferson is probably an error that only showed up on an earlier die state and then degraded from the die as more and more nickels were produced from that same die pair, similar to the way cameos showed up in older proof sets which generally only occurred on the first couple hundred strikes. These Bison/Buffalo Nickels have to be the most fascinating coin to have been released by the mints in quite some time. We also discovered several scarce minor doubled die coins from Philadelphia and one from Denver mint Bison nickels in circulation bags, listed separately. Those may or may not be later die states of the ones that show up in Mint sets. You are bidding on both the combination Error "SPEAR TIP" and minor DDO/DDR (Doubled Die Obverse/Reverse) variety Bison Nickel AND what we strongly believe to be the highly obvious Mint-corrected version of the same error which removed the "SPEAR TIP" but now shows "JEFFERSON CRYING", and which inadvertently created a second equally interesting and equally dramatic but much rarer error. See micro-photos of this phenomenal two-coin set. This error/variety appears to be an errant design flaw with detail in strong relief. Since it is unlikely this coin is listed elsewhere, I have assigned number RM#05P5cDDO/DDR-002 for this coin in our Rushmore file. For technical reasons, the corrected version has not been numbered, but has been appropriately named the "CRYING JEFFERSON" (it appears as though there may be some slight progression of the crying/tear stream which would make this a very rare "error" as opposed to a numbered "variety"). Upon further study of the "Crying Jefferson" error, it is believed that the progression noted above is probably related to die state, meaning that as the die continued to be used, the details began to disappear, similar to the old proof coin production process (approximately mid to late 1970's or earlier process) that reduced cameo effect as new dies were used beyond the first couple hundred impressions. This makes the "Crying Jefferson" error one that basically shows up well only on early die state examples and also making it Very Rare in early die state. The example you are bidding on will be an early die state "Crying Jefferson Error" created while the mint-corrected Spear Tip variety was being fixed, along with the scarce original mint-created "Spear Tip" variety -- two coins. Please wait for microphotos to load -- of the examples located, the Spear-Tip are identical with no progression. Look for notches on the DDO/DDR photos -- unable to capture all details, but they are true Tilted-Hub minor Doubled Die Obverse and Reverse as well as the other error/variety elements previously noted.
