The Sherlock Holmes film, Dressed To Kill, starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, was written by Frank Gruber and Leonard Lee. The first screenplay is by Frank Gruber and has the working title of “Prelude to Murder”, 95 pages, 4to, carbon typescript on yellow paper, dated in type “June 1945” on front stiff card wrapper. The second script is Leonard Lee’s screenplay has the same working title, dated in type on front wrapper, January 16, 1946, 86 pages, 4to, mimeograph pages on off-white paper, with numerous re-write pages printed on blue paper dated January 21. Together in a contemporary black spring binding, typed title label “Dressed to Kill” on front cover. Some toning to sheets, generally fine. Laid in is a black and white 8 by 10 inch still of the film’s co-star Patricia Morison with with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce on the Universal Studios lot during the film’s production. Dressed to Kill, directed by Roy William Neill was released by Universal Pictures in 1946, and was the last of fourteen films starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Doctor Watson. The film has an original story, but combines elements of the Arthur Conan Doyle’s short stories “The Adventure of the Six Napoleons” and “A Scandal in Bohemia.” A clipped contemporary review laid in notes that Gruber adapted the work of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and that Lee wrote the screenplay: “Leonard Lee, scripting from Frank Gruber’s adaptation of a Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story turns in a well worked-out piece of writing, and Neill makes the most of the script with his direction.”
