Ornament descriptions: 1981 Angel in Flight The First White House Ornament Angel in Flight, The First White House Ornament. Ronald Reagan was President at this time, and the original ornament hung on the tree in the Blue Room of the White House that Christmas season. This first in the series ornament is a great piece of history and highly collectible. 1982 Dove of Peace Honoring George Washington, First President of the United States, 1789–97. A faithful miniature replica of the dove of peace weathervane that Washington commissioned for his home at Mount Vernon. 1983 The White House Honoring John Adams, Second President of the United States, 1797–1801. Adams was the first president to live in the White House and the ornament depicts the north facade of the house as he would have known it, before the addition of the columned portico so familiar to us today. 1984 The Jefferson Peace Medal Honoring Thomas Jefferson, third President of the United States, 1801–09. The design is based upon the historic Jefferson peace medal, minted in 1801. President Jefferson's portrait is featured on one side and the opposite side shows the clasped hands of an Indian and a soldier, crowned by a tomahawk and a pipe of peace. 1985 Madison Silhouettes Madison Silhouettes honoring James Madison, 4th President of the United States, 1809–17. The ornament celebrates the hospitality and warmth of the Madison White House and features two early silhouettes of President and Mrs. Madison. First Lady Dolley Madison, pictured here as a young woman in the 1780s, is most famous for saving the portrait of President Washington when the British burned the White House in 1814. 1986 The South Portico 1986 The South Portico honoring James Monroe, 5th President of the United States, 1817–25. The ornament features the south front of the President's House as it appeared in 1824 during Christmas and New Year's festivities. The half-circle South Portico was built the previous year, giving the mansion one of its most distinctive architectural features. 1987 White House Doors 1987 White House Doors honoring John Quincy Adams, 6th President of the United States, 1825–29. Adams was a dedicated gardener who developed the landscape of the White House, and established the grounds as an arboretum of American tree specimens. The sandstone portal and double mahogany doors of the White House, decorated for Christmas with evergreen wreaths and red poinsettias, set the theme for this ornament. 1988 The President’s Children 1988 The President’s Children honoring Andrew Jackson, 7th President of the United States, 1829–37. 1989 THE BICENTENNIAL OF THE PRESIDENCY The White House Christmas Ornament for 1989 celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Presidency of the United States with a replica of the official seal of the president. This familiar emblem accompanies the president on all official occasions. It decorates the platform where he speaks and it is a familiar feature of his public appearances. It is this seal that President Rutherford B. Hayes adapted in 1880 to a coat of arms for the president.
