In 1963, the All-Star Game reverted back to the original format of a single event each year, after Major League Baseball adopted two separate events each season from 1959 to 1962. After mixed reviews led to the end of the All-Star Game "doubleheader," the 1963 MLB All-Star Game was played at Cleveland Stadium, formerly Municipal Stadium, on July 9, 1963 in front of more than 44,000 fans. The American League squad consisted of Minnesota Twins Earl Battey (C) and Zoilo Versalles (SS), Chicago White Sox Nellie Fox (2B), Detroit Tigers Al Kaline (OF), Boston Red Sox Frank Malzone (3B), New York Yankees Joe Pepitone (1B) and Los Angeles Angels Albie Pearson (CF), Leon Wagner (LF) and starting pitcher Ken McBride. For the record-setting 24th and final time, St. Louis Cardinals Stan Musial took the field as a reserve outfielder playing alongside teammates Ken Boyer (3B), Dick Groat (SS), Bill White (1B) and Julian Javier, who replaced Pittsburgh’s injured Bill Mazeroski at second base, San Francisco Giants Ed Bailey (C) and Willie Mays (CF), Milwaukee Braves Hank Aaron (RF), Los Angeles Dodgers Tommy Davis (LF) and Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Jim O’Toole. O’Toole and McBride held hitter scoreless in the first inning and then St. Louis’ Dick Groat got the NL on the board in the top of the second with and RBI single scoring Mays who walked to lead off the inning. In the bottom half of the frame, McBride helped his own cause with a single to left that scored Leon Wagner from second. In the top of the third, Aaron reached on a force-out before Mays drove him in with a single to center. Ed Bailey then drove Mays to the plate for his second run of the game on an RBI single to center. Down 3-1, the American League once again responded with two RBI singles from Malzone and Battey to knot that game at two apiece. In the fourth, Detroit’s Jim Bunning relieved McBride. In the top of the fifth, after Bunning walked Tommy Davis, he was able to reach third on a flyball error by New York Yankee Bobby Richardson and then Mays drove him in on a groundout to first to put the NL ahead 4-3. Pitching virtually ruled for the remaining innings as only one more run crossed the plate for the NL when Chicago Cubs Ron Santo drove in Bill White with an RBI single in the eighth. Chicago Cub Larry Jackson was awarded the 5-3 victory as Bunning absorbed the loss. Though he only had one hit, batting .333 and going 1-for-3, Willie Mays was named All-Star MVP as he scored twice, stole two bases and drove in 2 RBI. Mays also made a dazzling catch in eighth to rob New York's Joe Pepitone of an extra base hit. St. Louis Cardinals Stan Musial entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the fifth inning and lined out to right in his final at-bat to end his All-Star career with a record six home runs and a .317 career batting average in 24 All-Star Games.
