Description: Beautifully presented, this is Oscar WIlde's retelling of the brutal and scandalous story of Salome and King Herod. It was translated from the original French by Wilde's lover, Lord Alfred Douglas (English, 1870–1945) and illustrated by Valenti Angelo, an award-winning Italian-American printmaker, illustrator and author. The book begins with an introduction by Holbrook Jackson (British, 1874-1948), journalist, writer, publisher and bibliophile. Oscar Wilde (Irish, 1854-1900) wrote this play in French for Sarah Bernhardt in 1896, in Paris. In a one-act drama, Wilde tells the Biblical story of Salome, who demands the head of John the Baptist on a silver platter as a reward for her dancing for King Herod the salacious Dance of the Seven Veils. As published in 1945 by Heritage Press, New York, this first edition book is finely bound in black linen with illustrations of Salome blind stamped on the front and back covers. There's gilt lettering on the spine. The pages are designed in the elegant French fold style to give each page added thickness. The title page is illustrated and decorated, and all of the pages are a rich, golden color and have ornamental borders. There are additional illustrations among them with touches of gold, hand applied by the artist, Valenti Angelo. This book's covers are clean with no wear, but with minor sun fading on the spine, as shown. The interior is clean, bright, and unmarked, and the binding and hinges are sound. 51 pages 6.5" x 10.25"
