Description: "SUNNY SAM – SOLDIER VERSION" CHARACTER DOLL - 1938 Ideal Novelty & Toy Co. 8" x 13". Painted composition head / hands with wood feet / body & fabric clothes. Sunny (Soldier) Sam is from the Ideal "Flexy" doll series and is wearing his original soldier outfit, including scarce hat accessory & coat buttons. Head is jointed on wood body with flexible wire tubing for his arms and legs. Feet are large and flat which allows the doll to stand unassisted. The detailed head was sculpted by doll artist Joseph Kallus (best known for his work with Kewpie and the Cameo Company dolls). NOTE: the Flexy series motto was "The Doll of a Thousand Poses". Nice facial detail and overall "look". A quality-made toy with outstanding eye appeal. Uncommon version. Condition of FABRIC OUTFIT is considered GOOD with minimal surface/stain/edge wear. Minimal fraying with minor seam separation under his left armpit. Condition of COMPOSITION HEAD & HANDS is considered FAIR to POOR with miscellaneous surface/stain/edge wear. Misc. compo/paint cracking/separation on head with scattered spot paint loss. No regluing is apparent. Overall, despite obvious defects, we feel this scarce doll is still in displayable condition by most standards (see photos). A rare figural for the VINTAGE CHARACTER TOY & DOLL enthusiast.
