Description: Spalted maple is a type of wood that has been affected by fungus. The spores of the fungus enter the wood through cracks or wounds, and as the fungi grow, they produce patterns called “spalting.” These patterns can be very beautiful and unique. In order to use this wood, first it must be dried, then stabilized with resin under vacuum then pressure. This of course kills any fungus and fills the voids left from moisture and air with colorless odorless hardened resin, but most important makes the wood impervious to damage from moisture or solvents.
