Description: 1887/1903 'SAMANTHA AT SARATOGA' by JOSIAN ALLEN'S WIFE Marietta (TRAMP DIALECT) This book was published without a printed copyright date. The preface was signed and dated with 1887. This particular copy was given as a gift at Christmas to someone in 1903 and has inscribed inside the cover. See photos. The dialect is written like a tramp from the late 19th Century would speak on the streets of New York - where it was written. Here is an excerpt from the book: "When Josiah read my dedication he said "it wuz a shame to dedicate a book that it had took most a hull bottle of ink to write, to a lot of creeters that he wouldn't have in the back dooryard. But I explained it to him, that I didn't mean tramps with broken hats, veriegated pantaloons, ventilated shirt-sleeves, and barefooted. But I meant tramps with diamond earrings, and cuff-buttons, and Saratoga trunks, and big accounts at their bankers." (Preface, page 3) The sketches depicting the characters are somewhat humorous and possible printed by wood block. No credit has been given to an illustrator or artist.
