1887 Gold Currency Two Pound NGC MS61PL - Marsh T24 Dish 205 {R5 Rarity}

Description: Like a number of sovereigns from the Jubilee head series, the Jubilee head two pound coin can be found in a number of varieties. Jubilee head gold coin specialist David Iverson has written extensively about both the proof and currency issue design variations, and spent years surveying the market to identify the rarer varieties. The coin shown, photographed above, is one of these varieties, and is most easily identified by observing the distance between the Small Diamond Crown of Queen Victoria and the “B” of “BRITT”. Further differences in the design can be identified in the folds of the veil, the width of the effigy, and the proximity of the crown to the denticles. These design variations make the variety distinct from the standard-issue coin. 1887 Victoria (1837-1901) gold Two Pounds Jubilee type crowned bust with angled J type J.E.B. initials on truncation. Rarer obverse die with the B of BRITT starting just above the right side of crown, 8 pearls to each arch of crown, thinner obverse rim not encroached by cross on top of crown. VICTORIA D: G: BRITT: REG: F: D:, no indent at rear of bust for final colon. Reverse - St George and Dragon with smaller date in exergue, tiny B.P. to upper right of exergue (Dyer obverse 1b / reverse 2; S.3865). Quite proof-like as usual for this very rare variety, As can be seen by the attribution on the slab, this is the Marsh T24 double sovereign also referenced as Iverson/Hill Dish 205. David Iverson theorises that about 350 pieces were struck during one strike run. This makes this variety rarer than the Jubilee head proofs of the same year. It has also been awarded the coveted “PL” designation. There are only 8 currency double sovereign with prooflike attribution; some/most of which are this rare variety. A genuine R5 rarity. Graded by NGC at MS61PL seems a modest grade, however just three MS62PL are graded higher at both NGC & PCGS. Be assured that the coin offered is the one the fortunate buyer will receive. Buyers should have significant feedback as a buyer. Those who do not may be unsuccessful in their bids. If you have any queries or other questions please ask.
