A NOTE ON EDITIONS This book was first published by Houghton, Osgood and Company in 1878. This first edition had 176 pages. A second revised and expanded edition was first published by Houghton, Mifflin and Company in 1882. This second edition had two additional chapters and was 226 pages. It is easy to confuse the editions as the look very similar, and were initially published within a few years of each other. Only the Houghton Osgood is the true first edition, but most collectors value the first printing of the Houghton Mifflin as well, given the expanded content. Houghton Osgood was formed by a merger of two companies in 1878. A few years later Osgood left the company and the company was renamed Houghton Mifflin. As the new 1882 edition had new content, Houghton Mifflin treated the issue as a first issue, and it thus followed Houghton Mifflin’s practice of having the issue date on the title page only for the first printing. Subsequent printings omitted this date and instead indicated the printing by noting it was the “Sixth Edition” or “Tenth Edition” or the like. So all Houghton Mifflin printings will carry the 1878 copyright date, but none would have been printed prior to 1882. If it does not way 1882 on the title page, it would not be a first issue of that edition but printed at a later date. Thus, in a true first edition the year 1878 appears on both the title page and the copyright page and the publisher will be Houghton, Osgood and Company. The first Houghton, Mifflin and Company edition will have the date 1882 on the title page and the year 1878 on the copyright page, and will have 2 additional chapters titled "A Wilderness Romance" and "What Some People Call Pleasure." There have been countless reprints over the decades, and the content has varied somehwhat in editions after the various printings of the second edition. Another giveaway is that all 1878 1st editions I have seen from Houghton Osgood have the additional gilt design along the top and lower front edges, as seen here, in addition to the gilt letters on the title and author name. As far as I have seen, only the Houghton Osgood editions have this extra gold, and subsequent printings have the gilt letters only on the title and author name. All Houghton - whether Houghton Osgood or Houghton Mifflin –hardcover editions were issued in varying cover colors - red, green, brown - but all with the same blind stamped design. I’ve never figured out the reason for this color range, but all seem identical otherwise. This item is the first printing of the Houghton Mifflin edition. Note that this edition has 226 pages, more than the earlier 1878 Houghton Osgood, which did not have the two chapters titled "A Wilderness Romance" and "What Some People Call Pleasure" and which had 178 pages.
