Hoffmann was considered to be one of the greatest authorities on the theory and practice of magic, despite his own limited professional experience as a magician. Professor Hoffmann (1839–1919) was the pseudonym of Angelo John Lewis, an English-born barrister and writer who has been described as "the most prolific and influential magic author and translator until modern times." During the early 1860s he learned magic from a book and became an amateur magician. Under the pen name Professor Hoffmann, in 1873 he published a series of articles in Routledge's Every Boy's Annual. These articles were collected and published as Modern Magic in 1876.Condition: Rebound in a library binding (although there are no library markings). Inside front cover and endpaper are lightly foxed. Title page has some smudges. Light foxing on page edges. Pages are age-toned. One page has pencil notations (see photo).
