BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Lyndhurst is a large village and civil parish situated in the New Forest National Park in Hampshire, England. Serving as the administrative capital of the New Forest, it is a popular tourist attraction. The nearest city is Southampton, about nine miles (14 km) to the north-east. The name derives from an Old English name, comprising the words lind (lime tree) and hyrst (wooded hill). The Queen’s House becomes ‘The King’s House’ when the monarch is male and is sited on a small hill, at the west end of the High Street of Lyndhurst, with open ground sloping to the south behind. Over the years the Queen’s House has served different functions. It has been a Manor House, a Royal Residence, a Court of Justice, and the Administrative Office of the New Forest. The house itself has been modified and enlarged several times, but the boundary of its grounds has remained almost unaltered. The Queen’s House is primarily the H.Q. of the New Forest National Park, but has retained the hall where the Verderers’ of the Forest hold their ancient courts.
