Description: This antique porcelain plate was produced in France at Faienceries de Choisy-le-Roi in the latter part of the 19th century, likely the 1870s. The impressed mark on the back (HB) refers to Hippolyte Boulenger of the company. The decorative plate is one of a series known as "Talking Plates" for the descriptive writing beneath an ornate illustration. This is number 5 in a series of whimsical military-themed plates, featuring soldiers in black and white surrounded by a lavish lavender border of military items. The writing in French is: on commence a prendre l'air crane, roughly "We start to look stupid." The decorative plate measures about 7 5/8" across and has no chips. There is crazing with darkening visible on the back. The front of the plate shows some utensil or storage scratches but overall has a lovely patina.
