Red Shirley Papaver rhoeas Poppy Flower Seeds also known as Remembrance Poppy, American Legion Poppy, Flanders Poppy and Red Corn Poppy. The Red Poppy (Papaver rhoeas) is known by many different names: Red Corn Poppy, American Legion Poppy, Remembrance Poppy, and Flanders Poppy being the most common. Each one of these names refers to the same flower. The Red Poppy is native to southern Europe and has been associated with agriculture for many centuries. The name ‘Flanders Poppy’ refers to the aftermath of a famous WWI battle on Flanders Field where these poppies grew into abundance. This flower is also used in many countries as a symbol of remembrance for the casualties of wars fought throughout the 20th Century. To use the poppy as a cut flower the ends need to be either boiled in water or burned with a match, in order to curtail their naturally swift wilting pace.Papaver rhoeas is a variable, erect annual, forming a long-lived soil seed bank that can germinate when the soil is disturbed. In the Northern Hemisphere it generally flowers in late spring (between May and October in the UK) but if the weather is warm enough other flowers frequently appear at the beginning of autumn. It grows up to about 70 centimetres (28 inches) in height. The stems hold single flowers, which are large and showy, 5–10 cm (2–4 in) across,: 32 with four petals that are vivid red, most commonly with a black spot at their base. The petals slightly overlap each other. The plant can produce up to 400 flowers in a warm season, that last only one day. The flower stem is usually covered with coarse hairs that are held at right angles to the surface, helping to distinguish it from P. dubium in which the hairs are more usually appressed (i.e. held close to the stem). The capsules are hairless, obovoid (egg-shaped), less than twice as tall as they are wide, with a stigma at least as wide as the capsule. Like many other species of Papaver, the plant exudes white to yellowish latex when the tissues are broken. Papaver rhoeas Poppies grow in all regions of North America in full sun. It grows best in loose soil, not heavy clay and also prefers well-drained soil. It prefers a neutral pH of around 7, but it is adaptable. Even though Shirley Poppy wild flowers are an annual, it will re-establish the following year from re-seeding.
